Lakers Stun Legendary Oryx 3-1 in Cameroon Cup
The SW will now be represented by three teams in the next round of the 2017 Cup of Cameroon after Kumba Lakers defeated the legendary Oryx of Douala by 3 goals 1, in a delayed cup tie played at the Mount Cameroon Sports Centre on Thursday 10 August.
Captain Fon Clovis opened scores at the 11th minute for Lakers, a goal which translated their mastery of muddy pitches. But 23 minutes later, Coach Alexandre Belibi’s side equalized after Hervé Kon Bikout’s free header sailed over goalkeeper Fotenetus Akwe.
Kumba Lakers continued to control the game, knowing that it was a singular opportunity to stretch their cup dream this season.

Fortunately, play-maker Amadi Eric Nyasda beautifully set up midfielder Ebokoli Elvis to tap in Lakers’ second goal on the half time mark. Both teams withdrew to the open-air dressing room with Lakers leading 2-1.
Coach Belibi made three changes in the second half as Oryx FC of Douala threatened to seize possession. After a series of attempts by the visitors, a counter move saw Captain Fon Clovis assist Amadi Eric to make it 3-1 for Kumba Lakers at the 79th minute.
Nervous Coach Belibi |
Oryx of Douala were shocked by the full time score considering that it was the same team they led by two goals to zero at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium, on Saturday the 22nd of July, 2017. The match had ended prematurely due to poor visibility.
Lakers' coach, Flaubert Atangana |
At the end of the match, Coach Flaubert Atangana of Kumba Lakers praised his boys for a job well done.
“My players did well today and we are happy. You know after the experience at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium we went back to the drawing board.”
“We want to go far in the Cup of Cameroon,” Mr Atangana said.
Lakers' Captain, Fon Clovis |
On his part, Oryx trainer Alexandre Belibi blamed the muddy pitch, claiming it marred their strategy. However he admitted Lakers played well.
The draw for the 32nd round will take place on Friday 11 August, 2017, in Yaoundé.
