Volleyball: Cameroon women crowned African champions
The volleyball lionesses of Cameroon have been crowned African champions for the first time in history, after they trounced heavyweights Kenya by 3 sets to zero on Saturday in Yaoundé.
The final which marked the end of the 2017 Africa Women's Volleyball Championship took place at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex.
The composed Cameroon saw off the nine-time champions in the first set by 25 points to 22, and eased through the second 25-19.
The third set was a veritable test for Coach Jean Rene Akono’s side. Cameroon scooped points all through but upon nearing the match point, the Harambe Stars bounced back and closed the gap.
At 27-27, the atmosphere was more than electric with nerves breaking away on both sides. However, the dynamic Cameroon kept calm and made 2 more priceless points, a sure straw that broke the Carmel’s back.
Coach Jean René Akono’s ladies on Friday booked the second final ticket after overcoming Senegal in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 27-25).
