Cameroon & Kenya face off at Women's African Volleyball final

The Volleyball Lionesses of Cameroon will this afternoon clash with the Harambe Stars of Kenya for the 2017 final of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship taking place in Yaoundé.




Coach Jean René Akono’s ladies yesterday booked the second final ticket after overcoming Senegal in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 27-25). The event unfolded in front of a full and excited house of spectators at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, also known as Palais des Sports in Yaoundé.

Moma Bassoko reportedly hit all the net positions beside the backline to finish as match scorer with 20 points, while Fatou Diouck led the losers with 20 points.

The 84 minutes match showed a lot of thrills especially in the third set when the Cameroonian team saved 3 set points to gain the match in straight sets with their strong defence, which made the real difference between the competing teams.

The Volleyball Lionesses have automatically qualified for next year’s World Championship in Japan.

Kenya trounced Egypt in first semi-final of the day


Nine-time champions Kenya were first to qualify for the final of the 2017 Women's African Nations Championship, following their decisive victory over Egypt 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) on Friday 13 October.




Middle blocker Edith Wisa played a great role in the victory with her good kill blocks and quick attacks where she scored 14 points. Egypt's Aya Elshamy led Egypt and match scorers with 15 points.

Egypt began the match as the better side and led frequently using the attacks of Elshamy the center Aya Ahmed, but quickly the Kenyans used their blockers to spike the quick attacks to survive frequent times in the first set before they won 25-23.

Kenya used the service as well as the combinations led by Jane Wacu to lead steadily in the second and third sets to win in straight sets.

The 3rd place match also takes place today between Senegal and Egypt.
