CHAN Morocco 2018: Angola Bundle Cameroon Out!
Cameroon have been shockingly bundled out of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
The Intermediate Lions have lost two matches consecutively. The latest happened on Saturday in Agadir where they were beaten 1-0 by Angola.
Angola captain Ricardo Job converted a penalty on the half hour mark to eliminate Cameroon 1-0 in a tense Group D clash in Agadir on Saturday.
Angola compounded Rigobert Song’s problems after the auxiliary Lions had lost to Congo by the same margin in the opening game of the group.
On Saturday, Cameroon started on a bright note with counter attacks but Angola had a perfect antidote to all of Cameroon’s tactics.
Angola opened the Cameroon defence and won a penalty on 28 minutes. It was due to a clumsy challenge by Bertrand Owundi on Vladimir Va. Captain Ricardo Job hammered home what turned out to be the only goal of the match.
The auxiliary Indomitable Lions continued to mount pressure on the Angola defence who were composed and strong. At half time, it was 1 for Angola and zero for Cameroon.
Back from the tunnel, Cameroon keeper Kalati made one of the best saves of the tournament on 52 minutes, diving to his right to deny Herenilson's punching header inside the six yard area.
Minutes later, midfielder Willy Namedji saw his decent shot inside the area blocked. Defender Alphonse Tientcheu also followed up, smashing a loose ball from outside the box into the target, but was denied by Landu Mavanga.
The match ended 1-0, making it two defeats on two. In a way, Cameroon played tactical football, but having nothing to show for overly makes it a dismal performance.
Consequently, all what Rigobert Song and the auxiliary lions have been building has been cruelly brought to an abrupt stop.
The win places Angola second in Group D with 4 points, 2 behind high-flying Congo-Brazzaville who punished Burkina Faso 2-0 to book a place in the quarter final round.
During the last group matches on Wednesday, Angola will need at least a draw against Congo-Brazzaville to pull through. On the other hand, to qualify, Burkina Faso must defeat Cameroon while hoping that Congo do them the favour to beat Angola.
For Cameroon, only national pride is at stake.
