Opopo and YOSA bow out of Cup Semis

2015 champions, UMS of Loum, and 2012 runners up, New Stars of Douala, will play the 2017 Cup of Cameroon final expected next month at the Ahmadu Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé.

During the decisive semifinals played over the weekend in Douala, New Stars overpowered Opopo 2-0 while UMS dismissed YOSA by the same score line.

Victoria United and 2013 champions Yong Sports Academy came quite close to the glory, but fell short of resilience. Concerning Coach Ndumbe Bosso’s team, it can be said they were carried by recent positive results against familiar foes UMS.

Despite the elimination, amateurs Opopo did incredibly well, and history holds to their favour that they made it to the semis for the first time in decades.

With just one shot off target for Opopo throughout 90 minutes, it was clear everything had gone wrong.

New Stars Coach Laurent Djam told Volcanic Sports, “We tried and scored two goals. Congratulations to my players. Opopo had many problems in the defence. I did much to prepare my team offensively.”

Talking to VS, Opopo Coach Mbock Maput said, “I’m not a happy Coach. It is not a good result. My Boys played with a lot of pressure. I insisted that attackers should attack but they were respecting New Stars defenders. We made the whole region to believe. I hate disappointing my fans. We just have to go back to the drawing board and insist on our number one priority which is qualifying into Elite 2.”

Missing to shake hands with President Paul Biya in Mfandena, is what Opopo’s centre-forward Mutia Evaristus didn’t dream of. But their President Ndive Thomas could see a silver lining in the dark cloud.

“At this stage of the competition, every team is eyeing the cup. We too we were eyeing it unfortunately we could not make it. We also wanted to go for the double, cup and Elite 2. It is rather unfortunate. I am happy with the guys, the presentation was not bad. It is a regional club, so getting to this level is a big achievement for us. It is one of its kind,” Opopo President Ndive Thomas said.

DG of ANAFOOT, Enow Ngatchu, was live at the Reunification Stadium (in blue suit).

However, most spectators like Carl Enow Ngatchu left the reunification stadium not only astonished, but believing that the goals scored by Ngoundo Billé and Cedric Djeugoue were allegedly influenced by supernatural forces.

A piece of magical concoction thrown into Opopo’s goal had been found even by the centre referee, Kouete Lemouchele of Mbouda.
